MUTED HISTORIES: SEMINAR THREE - CHOME NGALA

The Department of History and Archaeology successfully hosted the third in a number of series of seminars dubbed "Muted Histories" . The seminar was held in a blended mode with the speaker of the Day and a physical audience being at the UoN Towers, 4th Floor room MLT 03 while an online audience was participating via Zoom. The event was held on Thursday, April 07, 2022 at 2.30 pm.

Mr. Chome Ngala presented his research on the Topic: The History of Racial Thinking in Mombasa. The presentation was an examination of racial thought within an African political context, with a specific emphasis of how racial thinking has influenced the modern political history of Greater Mombasa – from struggles for resources, rights and status to Islamic reformism – since the imposition of colonial rule in 1895.

Ngala shall be graduating with a PhD in African History at Durham University in 2022. His work examines the modern history of the Kenyan coast, and has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as African Affairs, Journal of Eastern African Studies, African Studies Review, Afrique Contemporine amongst others, including in edited volumes.
