Ngala shall be graduating with a PhD in African History at Durham University in 2022. His work examines the modern history of the Kenyan coast, and has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as African Affairs, Journal of Eastern African Studies, African Studies Review, Afrique Contemporine amongst others, including in edited volumes. Ngala’s doctoral research is an examination of racial thought within an African political context, with a specific emphasis of how racial thinking has influenced the modern political history of Greater Mombasa – from struggles for resources, rights and status to Islamic reformism – since the imposition of colonial rule in 1895.
