Justus Onyango Ondigi is a Tutorial Fellow and PhD candidate in the Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Nairobi. He also coordinates examination timetabling. He holds a Masters of Arts and Bachelor of Education (Arts) from the University of Nairobi.
His research interests are in the political economy of war, African conflicts and reconstruction of post-conflict societies.
In this presentation, Mr. Ondigi will focus on the complex intersections of society and piracy. He argues that Somali piracy is a labyrinth of economic tentacles of the 'underworld.' They have intricately weaved through Somalia’s coastal communities, so much so that, through time and space, livelihoods and the economic crime of piracy are invariably inseparable.
